Unable to access a file opened by another computer

Microsoft Office files (and possibly others) shared over the network can be accesses by one computer at a time only. Another user attempting to access the file will either receive an error message that the file is corrupted (Mac) or nothing will happen when the file is double clicked to open (Windows). The file will become accessible only after the application running the file  has been closed. Microsoft Office and other applications keep files in memory even after the file has been closed. Closing the application will releases the file from memory.
